5 cocktail homages to “The Big Lebowski”
The cocktail abides.
The people behind Emeryville’s Honor Kitchen & Cocktails are longtime fans of “The Big Lebowski.” How much so? Co-founder Alex Smith’s mantra is “The dude abides.” So it’s little wonder that the Honor crew has rolled out specialty cocktails for the cult fave movie’s 20th anniversary.
Of course, as any movie lover can tell you, it’s a mystery how any guy as determined to avoid drama as Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski is, can nonetheless become absolutely mired in it. But in the hands of the Coen brothers — with a drawling assist from star Jeff Bridges, as well as John Goodman, Julianne Moore and Steve Buscemi — all it took was a destroyed rug, a case of mistaken identity, a severed toe and a few White Russians to unleash mayhem.
On Aug. 8, theaters across the San Francisco Bay Area — including the Walnut Creek 14, Emeryville’s AMC Bay Street 16 and the San Jose Oakridge 20 — will be screening “The Big Lebowski.” And Honor Kitchen & Cocktails will be serving up themed cocktails that day, including a vodka and coffee-laced Lebowski, a bittersweet Hot Red Head homage to Bunny, and a darkly witty take on Donny dubbed Ash in the Wind.
Staying home to stream the flick this weekend? Mixology maven Smith is sharing cocktail recipes, too.
1 The Lebowski Cocktail
Combine 1 ounce vodka, ½ ounce coffee liqueur and 1 ounce cold-brew coffee. Serve over a large ice cube in a double-rocks glass, topped with coconut foam and a sprinkling of Oreo cookie crumbs.
2 Walter Sobchak, The Ringer
In a mixing glass with ice, stir 1¾ ounce High West double rye, ½ ounce elderflower liqueur, ¼ ounce St. Elizabeth all-spice dram, ½ ounce Dolin Genepy and 2 dashes of cardamom bitters. Strain into a coupe and garnish with orange peel.
3 Maude Lebowski, Unspeakable V
In a cocktail shaker without ice, dry shake 1½ ounces Tito’s vodka; ¼ ounce each St. George raspberry liqueur, elderflower liqueur and violette; ½ ounce simple syrup; 1 ounce fresh lemon juice and ¾ ounce egg whites for 10 seconds. Add ice, then shake until cold. Double strain into a coupe glass and garnish with a lavender sprig.
4 Bunny Lebowski, Hot Red Head
In a cocktail shaker, muddle 1 sprig fresh mint with ½ ounce simple syrup. Add ice, 1 ounce Fernet, ½ ounce Montenegro amaro, ½ ounce fresh lemon juice, 2 dashes peach bitters and 1½ ounces cranberry juice, and shake until chilled. Double strain into a coupe glass and serve garnished with fresh mint.
5 Donny, Ash in the Wind
Dust half the rim of a double-coupe glass with smoked sea salt. In a cocktail shaker with ice, combine 1½ ounces Fidencio mezcal; ½ ounce each Dolin Genepy, green Chartreuse and simple syrup; ¾ ounce fresh lemon juice and 1 ounce ginger shrub. Shake until chilled. Strain into the prepared glass and serve with a sprinkle of smoked sea salt.
